The Blueface Elevator team was in Limerick on the 23rd of June as we continue the heats of our Business-Pitch competition. We’ve seen so many smart and creative ideas at this stage, it’s going to be hard to pick just one winner when it comes to the final!
The Limerick heat was held in the fab Carphone Warehouse, Crescent Shopping Centre and was a very varied event, featuring entrants in a diverse range of sectors including; Procurement & Outsourcing, Natural Beauty, Renewable Energy and Monument Works. Our guest judge for this event was Carphone Warehouse Assistant Store Manager, Cathy O’Flaherty, who very kindly stepped in at the last minute after the Store Manager suffered a broken leg!
Winner on the day was Barry Spearman with one of the most original products we have seen in the entire competition; headstones for graves made out of an environmentally friendly and extremely durable glassfibre composite. The judges were impressed with the amount of product development and market research Barry had done, and really saw the potential for commercial success in his idea.
Other entrants on the day included Patrick Walsh who, with his company Limerick Wave, has developed a highly efficient method of generating energy from waves. The judges commented on the importance of companies such as this in making Ireland a more energy-efficient society through development of innovative new techniques. Mike McGrath pitched his business, Supply.ie – which offers procurement services for small to medium sized companies. Mike has already enjoyed some success with this venture and the judges saw great international potential for his idea.
Finally, Cearbhúil Ni Fhionnghusa presented her highly original and very charming business, Ruby Roo, which creates natural beauty products from locally sourced ingredients without the use of chemicals. The judges and indeed, many audience members, were very taken with the wonderful look and smell of the samples Cearbhúil kindly brought along.
Speaking after the event, judge and Blueface CEO Alan Foy commented on the high standard of entrants to the Limerick heat of Blueface Elevator. Limerick has long been known as a centre of enterprise and it certainly lived up to its reputation when we visited!
The next Blueface Elevator competition will be held in Carphone Warehouse, Dundrum on the 30th of June, with the final heat held the following week in Carphone Warehouse, Carrick on Shannon, on the 7th of July. Unfortunately we are not accepting further entries to the competition at this time but more information may be obtained by contacting elevator@blueface.ie
