What is VoIP?
VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. This protocol facilitates the travel of your voice calls through the Internet, rather than through traditional phone lines.
By bypassing phone lines, Blueface’s service allows you to save a lot of money on your call costs.
If you have a broadband service independent of your phone line, you can even stop paying line rental.

How do I use Blueface?
Does Blueface provide broadband?
What broadband speed do I need?
The broadband speed requirement is dependent on the number of concurrent calls.
The following table highlights the typical broadband speeds required when using a dedicated broadband connection for voice.

Will call quality be as good as with a traditional phone?
Yes, call quality will be as good, and VoIP to VoIP may be even better.
However, it is important to note that your call quality is reliant on your individual broadband connection.
How do I switch to Blueface?
It is very easy to start using Blueface and to start saving money on your phone calls right away.
Do I Pay Line Rental with Blueface?
No. Blueface does not charge a line rental fee to any of its customers, however, an active internet connection is required to avail of IP-telephony.
If you receive your broadband through your phone line (DSL), that line must remain active as it carries your broadband.
Did you know?
By 2025, most telecommunications companies will have deactivated line-based infrastructure in preparation for the global IP-telephony migration.
Unfortunately, DSL users cannot stop paying line rental but can save on phone charges and additional phone lines.
If you have two phone lines in your home/office, then you can cancel the telephony line not used for DSL and migrate your phone to Blueface.
Either way, customers stand to save up to 60% on calls by switching to VoIP.
I Want to Stop Paying Line Rental, What Can I Do?
Companies such as Virgin Media have rolled out high-speed fibre connections, which are separate from traditional ADSL lines. As they are separate, they are not dependant on lines or more-to-the-point — line rental.

According to the Blueface Research, the average broadband connection in Ireland is 50MBps, that’s enough for 50 concurrent VoIP calls — even for small businesses!
The availability is not as widespread as the traditional phone line broadband – which stretches to most corners of the map – but rollout continues.
Once you’ve upgraded your internet to fibre, you can seamlessly add a Hosted VoIP Solution without paying line rental.
Certain security systems and point-of-sale (POS) terminals require an active line to function and remain connected. Like telephony, this is rapidly changing.
Modern iterations of these devices are no longer dependent on line-telephony which allows for faster response times and easier purchasing decisions respectively.
Soon, production online-dependent devices will cease and these considerations with them.
Can I call mobile phones?
Yes, you can call mobile phones from your Blueface phone, in fact Blueface have some of the most competitive rates in the country.
Calling a mobile phone from your Blueface account is exactly the same as calling a regular number: just dial and talk.
Minutes towards mobile calls are included in certain call plans, or will require pay as you go credit. You can top-up your account on line 24 hours a day with call credit, using a debit or credit card.
Do I get a phone number with my call plan?
All Blueface subscription call plans come with a geographic and a non-geographic (076) number. Blueface can also provide you with additional phone numbers for an extra charge. Check out the international virtual number page for additional number pricing.
1. Geographic Phone Number
Geographic numbers are ordinary (PSTN/ISDN) telephone numbers that are linked to a geographic location. You will be asked to choose an area code when you purchase your call plan.
2. Non-Geographic Phone Number
076 is the unique prefix for calling VoIP phones in Ireland, local call rates apply on 076 numbers and they can be called from any regular landline or mobile phone.
New customers will be assigned a 076 number automatically when they buy any call plan. Existing Blueface customers who do not have a 076 number can request one for no extra charge.
3. Fax Number
If you need a fax number for your business, one of your allocated numbers can be set as a fax, or you can apply to have an additional fax number added to your account.
4. International Virtual Number
Blueface can provide you with a geographic number from many places around the world for an additional charge. Choosing to add a virtual geographic number to your Blueface account means that clients calling you from that location will only pay the price of a local call.

Can I keep my current phone number?
Cable and wireless broadband customers have the opportunity to keep their current phone number and port it to Blueface.
This is because their broadband connection is independent of their phone line.
To port your number, you must simply fill out the ‘Port Request Form’ on the ‘Account Management’ page of the old customer portal.
You will also need to send us a copy of a recent invoice, to show proof of ownership of the number.
Can I connect my existing alarm, fax or credit card machine?
Do I have to have my computer switched on to make calls?
No, your computer does not need to be switched on to make calls.
IP phones plug directly into your broadband router giving them direct access to your Internet connection.
This means you do not have to turn your computer on to make and receive calls and you can use VoIP like a traditional phone line.>
If you are using a softphone you will need to have your computer switched on as the software that is used to dial and receive calls is installed on your computer’s hard drive.
Is Blueface the same as Skype?
Blueface differs from Skype in several ways.
Blueface allows you to use your phone in the manner you are accustomed to, similar to a traditional landline but with lots of extra services and features.
You also have the option to transfer your existing number to Blueface.
Unlike Skype, who bill per minute, Blueface bill per second which means you pay exactly for the time you spend on the phone. Blueface to Blueface calls are also free.
Can I call emergency services from a Blueface phone?
Yes, you can access the emergency services on either 999 or 112.
Please remember that in the event of a power failure or loss of Internet connectivity you will be unable to make any calls from a Blueface phone.
In case of this event please have an alternative method of communication available like a mobile phone.
Multimedia Messaging (MMS)
Regrettably, Blueface do not support MMS messaging at the moment.
We hope to be able to provide this service at some stage in the future, however, this is not something we can currently offer or have any details as of yet to when this may be released. However, other third party apps such as Viber and Whatsapp can be used within the guidelines recommended with the Data on your current Mobile Plan.
Are VoIP numbers portable?
Yes, as long as you own the numbers, you can port VoIP numbers from your current telcom provider.
The only exception is when you are reliant on your telephone supplier for your broadband connection or for your alarm system.
How does the process look like when you are a Blueface customer?
